Description

The 2021 Chianti Classico vintage will be remembered for its long and patient growing season: a year capable of delivering power and grace. The winter was not overly cold and rainy until the end of March. The onset of spring favored early budbreak, but the vines' growing cycle subsequently slowed due to the generally cool and dry weather in April. May and June were normal, not too hot, and with some rain that ensured excellent flowering and fruit set for all the varietals in the Solaia vineyard. The summer was generally hot and dry, especially in August, a month marked by some rain at the end that allowed the vines to optimally begin the ripening process. September and October were ideal: sunny, not overly hot, breezy, and characterized by cool nights, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly. Overall, 2021 must be considered among the best vintages ever. Harvesting operations, slightly later than average, began in the last days of September for Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese and concluded on October 21st with Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tasting notes

A deep ruby red with purple highlights, Solaia 2021 strikes the nose with its complexity: intense notes of ripe black berries, such as blackcurrant, blackberry, and purple plum, combine with fresh sensations of mint, myrtle, and spicy hints of white pepper. The sweet aromas of powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and licorice are perfectly integrated. On the palate, the entry is rich, mellow, vibrant, and characterized by an excellent and balanced structure: silky tannins accompany a long finish characterized by a very persistent aftertaste, with hints of dark chocolate.

Cellar

Tenuta Tignanello is located in the heart of Chianti Classico, on the rolling hills between the Greve and Pesa valleys. It extends over 319 hectares of land, with approximately 130 hectares of vineyards. Among its vineyards are two treasures: the Tignanello and Solaia vineyards, which extend across the same hillside on soils derived from Pliocene marine marl with limestone and schist. They enjoy warm days and cool nights during the growing season.

The vineyards of the same name produce Solaia and Tignanello, which have been described by the international press as "among the most influential wines in the history of Italian winemaking." According to Marchesi Antinori, they represent a constant challenge and a never-ending passion.
The Tenuta Tignanello vineyards are mainly composed of the native Sangiovese and non-traditional varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
