Description

It was the first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first modern red wine blended with non-traditional varieties (such as Cabernet), and among the first red wines in Chianti Classico not to use white grapes. Tignanello is a milestone. It is produced with a selection of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc.

The 2021 Chianti Classico vintage will be remembered for its long and patient growing season: a year that delivered power and grace.
The winter was mild and rainy until the end of March. The onset of spring favored early budbreak, but the vines' growth cycle subsequently slowed due to the generally cool and dry weather in April. May and June were normal, not too hot, and with some rain, ensuring excellent flowering and fruit set for all the varietals in the Tignanello vineyard. The summer was generally hot and dry, especially in August, when some rain showers towards the end allowed the vines to begin the ripening process optimally.
September and October were ideal: sunny, not too hot, breezy, and marked by cool nights, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly. Overall, 2021 can be considered one of the best vintages ever. Harvesting began in the last ten days of September with the Sangiovese and concluded on October 20th with the Cabernet.

Tasting notes

Tignanello 2021 has an intense ruby red color with purple highlights. The nose is complex: notes of ripe plum, blackberry, and candied orange peel alternate with pleasant sensations of dark chocolate, caramel, and licorice; sweet nuances of tobacco round out the bouquet.
On the palate it is rich, graceful, intense, and characterised by sweet and vibrant tannins that precede a long and persistent finish.

Cellar

Tenuta Tignanello is located in the heart of Chianti Classico, on the rolling hills between the Greve and Pesa valleys. It extends over 319 hectares, with approximately 130 hectares of vineyards. Among its vineyards are two treasures: the Tignanello vineyard and the Solaia vineyard, which extend across the same hillside on soils derived from Pliocene marine marl with limestone and schist, and enjoy warm days and cool nights during the growing season. From these eponymous vineyards, Solaia and Tignanello are produced, which have been described by the international press as "among the most influential wines in the history of Italian winemaking." According to Marchesi Antinori, they represent a constant challenge and a never-ending passion. Tenuta Tignanello's vineyards are composed primarily of the native Sangiovese grape, along with non-traditional varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
