Calabria, along with Sicily, have evidence of wine production dating back 2,000 years. Records state that wine was produced in the city of Crimissa, now known as Cirò, as far back as the times of Magna Graecia. Legend has it that at the Olympic Games in Greece, the winning athletes were offered wine produced in the city of Cirò. Today, this town lends its name to two important DOC wines: Cirò and Cirò Superiore, which use Gaglioppo, a red grape variety particularly suited to drought. Other grape varieties, such as Nerello Cappuccio, Greco Nero, Magliocco Canino, and Sangiovese, are used to produce the Savuto DOC.
