Saint James is the first rum brand managed by Luca Gargano, the newly appointed product manager for Spirit in 1975. Luca organized the first incentive trip to Martinique for the agents. Saint James was a match made in heaven, and it was love at first sight; Luca fell in love with Martinique, the beaches, the palm trees, the rum, and the Caribbean. Today, VELIER distributes the top Saint James range, and the story begins again. The Plantations St. James brand was created by Paulin Lambert, an enterprising Jamaican rum merchant from Marseille. In 1882, he registered the name and the design of the famous, flat-bottomed, square bottle that still identifies the brand today. He also purchased four distilleries, where he began producing Saint James rum. Paulin Lambert was one of the first entrepreneurs to use advertising to market a bottled alcoholic product, using every available means of communication: catalogs, posters, postcards... anticipating all his competitors and making the brand a leader in Martinique, France, and exporting to several global markets. In 1967, it was acquired by the Picon consortium, in 1971 by Cointreau, and in 2003 by the La Martiniquaise group.
The Saint James range is the largest and most comprehensive in Martinique and the entire Caribbean. Velier has selected an exceptional blanc, seven aged rums, and two vintage rums. The first is called Coeur de Chauffe, from the traditional name for Antillean rums distilled from the sole Pot still, the only remaining example in Martinique.
