The Abraxas winery, an integral part of the Tenute Scudieri project, is a magical place that embodies the bold and authentic spirit of Pantelleria. Situated on the slopes of Montagna Grande, at approximately 600 meters above sea level, it is the highest winery on the island, offering panoramic views of the sea and the volcanic rock formations.
The connection between Abraxas and the Pantellerian tradition is profound: the estate's vineyards are cultivated using the ancient Pantellerian bush training technique, a heroic practice that allows the vines to grow in hollows protected from the wind. This form of agriculture, which dates back to the Phoenicians, is so deeply rooted in the island's culture that it has been recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
The Scudieri family took over the company in 2020, deciding to invest not only in wine production but also in sustainable agriculture and hospitality.
Led by winemaker Riccardo Cotarella, the winery produces wines that bridge the past and present, showcasing both native vines and international varieties.
The agricultural land is considerable: Abraxas owns approximately 40 hectares, of which a portion – around 15 hectares – is actively cultivated.
Wine tastings
The vineyards are home to not only the island's typical Zibibbo, but also more “global” varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Nerello Mascalese, Malbec, and others.
Abraxas' production philosophy is based on respect for traditional practices: even the famous Passito di Pantelleria uses the drying technique on open-air racks, as required by the DOC regulations.
But Abraxas isn't just about wine: the estate also offers a genuine hospitality experience, with eight perfectly restored dammusi—the typical Pantellerian dwellings—surrounded by vineyards and caper gardens.
This makes a visit to the winery not just a wine tour, but a true sensory journey into the island's culture.
With the Tenute Scudieri project, Abraxas has become a modern enterprise yet deeply rooted in its land: a winery that looks to the future while never forgetting its origins, promoting high-quality wines and supporting agriculture that respects the landscape and tradition.
