Balbi Soprani was created in the late 1980s by Francesco Capetta as a winery for Cantine Capetta. A great expert and meticulous connoisseur of the Moscato hills, Francesco Capetta purchased some of the finest plots in the Santo Stefano Belbo and Cossano Belbo areas, areas that have always been suited to excellent viticulture. Since then, Balbi Soprani's mission has been to enhance Piedmont's winemaking heritage by vinifying its most noble and prestigious grape varieties. The soils, clayey and rich in limestone, have diverse geological origins: some are deep, others rich in rock, which give the wines intense and varied nuances. The austere hills, surrounded by woods, offer an ideal microclimate for vines and olives. Ten hectares are dedicated to olive groves, fifty to vineyards, located on the hilltops and facing south and west. We grow primarily native varieties: Grechetto and Trebbiano Spoletino for the whites, and Sangiovese and Sagrantino for the reds. At the heart of the Antonelli San Marco estate, directly beneath the old manor house, is the cellar, completely underground and designed for gravity-fed vinification, which involves the crushed grapes entering fermentation tanks and the pomace being discharged by gravity, without the use of pumps. We vinify only our own organically grown grapes, offering a product over which we have complete control at every stage, with the added guarantee of organic certification for both the grapes and the wines.
