Description

Sassicaia is a Bolgheri blend made with grapes grown in the heart of Bolgheri, between the sea and the hills: a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. Aged for 24 months in oak barrels before bottling.

Tasting notes

The color of this Bolgheri perfectly matches expectations: an intense and brilliant ruby red. The nose is filled with dark notes of berries, blueberry, blackcurrant, and black cherry, with subtle spicy notes of Mediterranean scrub, dark chocolate, dried fruit, and toasted almonds. It is well-structured, savory, and elegant, with soft, silky tannins. As always with Sassicaia, the finish is very long and persistent, revealing an exciting mineral texture.

Cellar

The name Tenuta San Guido is inextricably linked to the origins of a celebrated wine—considered one of the world's finest—Sassicaia. Since 1968, when the first vintage was released, Sassicaia has achieved unexpected global fame, growing year after year. This fairytale estate has also achieved numerous winemaking successes: Tenuta San Guido, named after San Guido della Gherardesca, who lived in the 13th century, is a historic winery in the Bolgheri area, located along the Etruscan coast from Livorno to Grosseto, in the Tuscan Maremma. Covering a total area of approximately 2,500 hectares, the estate currently boasts ninety hectares of vineyards, including 75 hectares dedicated exclusively to the production of Sassicaia, the latter born from an idea of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who wanted to create a great Bordeaux-style wine. It was, in fact, the 1920s when the Marchese himself, inspired by Bordeaux and the aristocracy of the past, dreamed of producing a truly thoroughbred wine. Having moved to the Tuscan estate in the second half of the 20th century, Marchese Incisa della Rocchetta began experimenting, planting several vines of French grape varieties in an area that had previously been completely unknown from a viticultural perspective. From that moment on, with splendid foresight, Marchese Incisa della Rocchetta was able to understand the potential of the Bolgheri area and of the very soils on which he had planted the vines, which possessed unique characteristics, a microclimate very similar to the Graves and Bordeaux areas, and a stony soil—a sassicaia, in fact—from which this extraordinary wine takes its name. In addition to the celebrated Sassicaia wine, Tenuta San Guido also produces two other labels: "Guidalberto," made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and "Le Difese," an IGT blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. With an average annual production of nearly 800,000 bottles, Tenuta San Guido deserves much of the credit for the Bolgheri region's international success. Tenuta San Guido's history and winemaking are almost unreal, seemingly suspended in time, almost mythical. Its ancient origins, the unique microclimate and terroir, and, above all, the quality of the final product have allowed Sassicaia to achieve an unparalleled distinction: it is the first Italian wine from a specific winery to hold a reserved DOC. The Bolgheri Sassicaia designation belongs exclusively to Tenuta San Guido, owned by the Incisa della Rocchetta family.
