Description

Carapace Montefalco Sagrantino from Tenute Lunelli is a wine born in a unique location, nestled between the hills of Montefalco and Bevagna, where the Umbrian light caresses vines rooted in deep, silty clay soils capable of retaining water even during the driest summers. It is here that Sagrantino, one of Italy's most tannic and fascinating grape varieties, finds its most severe yet elegant expression. The grapes are hand-harvested in October, when the bunches have reached full phenolic ripeness and their natural concentration is at its peak.
The vinification process begins with a cold pre-maceration that preserves and intensifies the aromatic richness of the skins. The must then ferments in large, temperature-controlled wooden vats, with a long maceration period that allows the wine to absorb the full character of Sagrantino: its deep color, intense aroma, and vigorous tannins. Aging is an essential part of Carapace's identity: two years in large oak barrels and at least another year in the bottle give the wine balance, roundness, and a complexity of rare finesse.

Tasting notes

In the glass, it displays a deep, almost impenetrable ruby red, yet pervaded by a luminosity that betrays the meticulous winemaking process. The nose is broad and layered, immediately recalling blackberry and blueberry jam, ripe and juicy berries, before opening onto deeper notes of cherries in brandy, carob, and rose petals, a floral detail that illuminates the dense bouquet. With oxygenation, nuances of licorice, cocoa, and sweet spices emerge, adding volume and a sense of enveloping warmth.
On the palate, Carapace is a powerful yet never harsh wine. The entry is surprisingly smooth, almost creamy, and the rich, ripe fruit fills the mouth with natural ease. The tannins, though present and punchy—as per the Sagrantino tradition—are expertly crafted: dense, elegant, dry yet not aggressive, they accompany the sip with authority without overwhelming it. The structure is ample and full, yet always balanced with freshness, and the finish is long and persistent, with a harmony that slowly unfolds and leaves behind impressions of dark chocolate, spices, and plump black fruits.

Cellar

The history of Tenute Lunelli is rooted in a winemaking tradition spanning generations—the Lunelli family built its reputation on high-end sparkling wines, but over time, it has chosen to expand its vision of viticulture, focusing not only on bubbles, but also on high-quality still wines.
In the 1980s, the idea of expanding the production of mature red wines to areas that best express the grape variety's vocation—areas with history, soil, climate, and tradition—began to take shape.
Thus, after an initial experience in Trentino, the Lunelli family decided in 2001 to invest in Umbria as well, purchasing approximately 30 hectares between the municipalities of Bevagna and Montefalco, a historic area for the cultivation of red wines and the famous native Sagrantino grape.
The goal—ambitious but clear—was to combine the experience, rigor, and winemaking sensibility of the Lunelli family with the tradition and identity of a territory that has always produced wines of great structure and depth.
From this project, Tenuta Castelbuono was born, an integral part of the larger Tenute Lunelli brand, with the clear desire to create wines that interpret the terroir with elegance, depth, and longevity.
