Description

The 2018 season in Chianti Classico began with a fairly regular winter in terms of both temperature and rainfall. Despite these weather conditions, the vineyards began budbreak a week earlier than the historical average for the area. Spring, and especially May, was characterized by frequent rainfall and slightly lower-than-usual temperatures, while June and July were dry and fairly warm, though never experiencing extreme conditions. Some rain in August and a dry, breezy period in September and October allowed the grapes to ripen ideally, ensuring good sugar content and excellent polyphenolic ripening. Harvest began in late September with Cabernet Franc, continued with Sangiovese, and concluded with Cabernet Sauvignon on October 10th.

Tasting notes

Solaia 2018 displays a deep ruby red color. On the nose, intense notes of ripe dark fruit, particularly blueberry and blackcurrant, blend with pleasant hints of dried flowers and lavender, accompanied by delicate spicy notes of white pepper and balsamic notes of mint and eucalyptus. The rich bouquet is rounded out by sweet and well-integrated aromas of white chocolate, cotton candy, and dried fruit. On the palate, it is enveloping and creamy: the soft, silky tannins provide a long, persistent, and highly elegant finish, with an aftertaste reminiscent of licorice and echoing the floral and spicy notes perceived on the nose.

Cellar

Tenuta Tignanello is located in the heart of Chianti Classico, on the rolling hills between the Greve and Pesa valleys. It extends over 319 hectares of land, with approximately 130 hectares of vineyards. Among its vineyards are two treasures: the Tignanello and Solaia vineyards, which extend across the same hillside on soils derived from Pliocene marine marl with limestone and schist. They enjoy warm days and cool nights during the growing season.

The vineyards of the same name produce Solaia and Tignanello, which have been described by the international press as "among the most influential wines in the history of Italian winemaking." According to Marchesi Antinori, they represent a constant challenge and a never-ending passion.
The Tenuta Tignanello vineyards are mainly composed of the native Sangiovese and non-traditional varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
