Description

The Sagrantino grape, grown for centuries exclusively in Montefalco, appears to have been brought there from Asia Minor by the followers of St. Francis.
First vintage of production 1981.
Vineyards: Located on hills between 300 and 400 m above sea level; south and south-west exposure; spurred cordon and Guyot training; average age 15 years.
Yield per hectare 45 hl/ha.
Harvest Generally in the second week of October, with the grapes being picked by hand.
Filling of the tanks by gravity, fermentation on the skins for 25-40 days at a temperature of 25-28°C.
Spontaneous clarification without filtration.
The wine matures in mostly large oak barrels for at least 18 months. It then rests in concrete tanks before bottling.
A wine that expresses itself best with long refinement in the bottle.

Tasting notes

Intense ruby red color.
Rich and powerful, ethereal and complex on the nose. Typically characterized by notes of fruit and aromatic herbs, with citrus, cherry, berries, mint, and oregano prominent.
On the palate it is a very structured wine, with a firm and persistent tannin.

Cellar

One hundred and seventy-five hectares in a single plot in the heart of the Montefalco DOCG zone. The soils, clayey and rich in limestone, have diverse geological origins: some deep, others rich in texture, which give the wines intense and varied nuances. The austere hills, surrounded by woods, offer an ideal microclimate for grapevines and olives. Ten hectares are dedicated to olive groves, fifty to vineyards, located on the hilltops and facing south and west. We grow primarily native varietals: Grechetto and Trebbiano Spoletino for the whites, Sangiovese and Sagrantino for the reds. At the heart of the Antonelli San Marco estate, directly beneath the old manor house, is the cellar, completely underground and designed for gravity-fed vinification, which involves the crushed grapes entering fermentation tanks and the pomace being discharged by gravity, without the use of pumps. We only use our own organic grapes to make wine, ensuring we have full control over every stage of the process. This guarantees the organic certification of both the grapes and the wines.
