Description

Massetino is the wine that expresses the second soul of Tenuta Masseto, a more immediate yet far from simple interpretation of one of Bolgheri's most iconic terroirs. It grows on the hills overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, in a mosaic of soils alternating between marine clays, ancient sands, and mineral veins emerging from the subsoil: a rare geological variety capable of giving the Merlot grapes—the beating heart of Massetino—an unparalleled depth and aromatic richness. A small amount of Cabernet Franc is also included, contributing finesse, structure, and tension, like a fine line shaping the wine's body and refining its profile.
Born as the "little brother" of the celebrated Masseto, Massetino quickly acquired its own identity: it's not a second choice, nor a second wine in the traditional sense, but rather the expression of parcels and selections that, while not part of the Masseto blend, possess character, complexity, and a natural elegance that deserve their own unique distinction. Harvesting is done by hand, with almost obsessive care for each bunch, and fermentation takes place in stainless steel or wood, with meticulous attention to temperature to preserve the purity of the fruit and aromatic finesse. Aging in barriques—some new, some used—gives the wine a silky, rounded texture, without ever weighing it down.

Tasting notes

In the glass, Massetino displays a deep, luminous ruby color, almost velvety to the eye. On the nose, it opens slowly, with the measured pace that characterizes great reds: ripe dark fruit—plum, blackberry, dark cherry—emerges first, followed by fresher, balsamic, and mineral notes reminiscent of the sea breeze and the Mediterranean vegetation surrounding the vineyards. As it oxygenates, the wine reveals more complex layers: sweet spices, bitter cocoa, finely integrated toasted wood, hints of tobacco, and a subtle earthiness that roots its identity to the soil that gave it birth.
On the palate, Massetino strikes a harmonious balance between power and grace. The entry is soft and enveloping, with the fruit unfolding full and juicy, supported by dense, silky tannins that are ripe but never dusty. The structure is substantial, but the well-balanced acidity lends energy and vivacity, preventing the wine from becoming heavy or monolithic. There's a rhythm to the sip: first the richness of the Merlot, then the energy of the Cabernet Franc, and finally a progression of flavors that culminates in a long, persistent finish, where notes of cocoa, dark spices, and hints of ripe fruit return. It's a wine that fills the mouth without overpowering it, that envelops the palate without tiring, and that leaves a sensation of balance and composure.
Massetino is meant to be enjoyed even when young, when the exuberance of the fruit is more evident and the freshness more pronounced, but it also has the structure and complexity to evolve over the years, gaining tertiary nuances and greater finesse.

Cellar

Tenuta Masseto is one of those places where silence seems to have a specific weight, a density of its own. As you approach the hill where the celebrated Masseto is born, the first thing that strikes you is the harmony between the vineyard and the surrounding landscape: perfectly aligned rows following the gentle curve of the land, the intense green of the holm oak forests and Mediterranean scrub, the distant reflection of the sea bringing with it a constant breeze. It is a hill of strong nature, shaped by a rare and precious soil, blue clay, a compact earth that retains water and gives the grapes an extraordinary intensity and concentration. Here, everything, every stone, every scent of the earth plays a role in the character of the wines, and the winery only complements this identity with discretion and depth.
Unlike many other monumental wineries, Masseto doesn't impose itself on visitors with flashy forms or attention-grabbing architecture. On the contrary, the winery almost seems to disappear into the landscape: it's hidden in the hillside, an underground structure that's more intuited than visible, as if meant to protect and preserve rather than show off. This choice isn't merely aesthetic: it's a statement of philosophy, a desire to let the wine and the land speak for themselves, not the hand of man.
Upon entering, the light changes immediately. From the brightness of the vineyard to a calm, measured gloom, a sort of held breath that accompanies those entering the space toward the heart of the place. The walls and floors convey the same sobriety perceived outside: natural materials, earthy colors, a clean architecture that displays nothing but preserves everything. The temperature remains constant, thanks to the hill that envelops the rooms, and the controlled humidity creates a still air, almost suspended in time.
The winemaking area is a perfect blend of technical rigor and respect for the fruit. Here, fermentation is a silent process, carefully and precisely monitored, without ever forcing the process. Every tank, every temperature setting, every racking has a single goal: to allow the grapes to express themselves, without unnecessary transformations. It's meticulous, patient, almost artisanal work, despite the use of modern tools. Technology, in this winery, serves the essence, not the spectacular.
Descending further, you reach the barrel cellar, a place where the silence becomes even more profound. The barrels rest in neat rows, bathed in a warm, soft light that barely touches the wood. It is here that the wine evolves, breathes, and slowly matures. Aging in barrels is not a process dictated by the calendar, but by the rhythm of the wine: each cuvée follows a different trajectory, a unique time, observed and listened to by the winemakers who accompany its growth.
