Description

"The challenge wasn't just to make a good wine, it was to make a great red wine in the land of white wines. Sergio Mottura succeeded, and every time I taste this blend... I'm as thrilled as the first time." (Shigeru Hayashi)

Tasting notes

A ruby red wine. Clear vegetal notes of tobacco and mint on the nose are complemented by hints of licorice, pepper, and roasted coffee on the finish.
Robust, with a marked sapidity, elegant tannins, good overall persistence.

Cellar

The Mottura estate extends across 130 hectares in an area rich in natural resources, bordered to the west by the hills and clayey gullies of Civitella d'Agliano and to the east by the Umbrian plain bathed by the Tiber.

The winemaking potential of these hills has been known since 1292, when the Orvieto land registry listed it as one of the most select areas for the production of the eponymous wine. This area, untouched by urban and industrial development, still offers vast swathes of pristine beauty, wild panoramas dotted with woods, lakes, and streams in a landscape of unspoiled nature, despite the proximity of major cities like Rome and Florence.

The estate has been owned by the Mottura family since 1933, with a strong commitment to safeguarding its rich natural heritage. In the 1960s, the company began to modernize: from sharecropping to direct farming, the family began to seek optimal use of the land, where vines have thrived for centuries. At the time, the vineyards, many generations old, were still trained according to the system inherited from the Etruscans, with vines "married" to tall trees that supported them.

Under Sergio Mottura's leadership, these old vineyards were replaced with specialized vineyards using modern structures and criteria, covering the current 36 hectares of vineyards. New plantings are added each year to ensure the continued high quality of the grapes. When choosing the varieties to plant, we favor indigenous varieties, which have always been present in the area, selecting clones with the characteristics best suited to winemaking. Long cultivation in the same environment has resulted in a natural selection of the species best able to resist local pathogens, allowing for improved organic farming management.
