Description

Canaiolo Nero is one of the oldest grape varieties ever cultivated, widespread especially in Tuscany but also in the neighboring Marche and Umbria. It seems to have been brought to our territory by some passing clergyman or by travellers and found here the ideal soil and climate conditions to enhance its virtues.
Our vineyard that produces Cannaiola in the municipality of Capodimonte, a terrace overlooking the lake and the wonderful Bisentina Island, is partly still the one planted in the late 1960s by our beloved grandfather Tancredi Ortenzi, registered as an indigenous Arsial genetic heritage, the beating heart and typicality of our Cannaiola.

Tasting notes

Ruby red in color, the nose is aromatic and persistent, revealing notes of rose, violet, wild cherry, and blackberry. On the palate, it is smooth, with sweet undertones and a slightly bitter aftertaste, balanced by its freshness and savory character.

There are several etymological theories surrounding its name. Tommaseo, in his Great Dictionary of the Italian Language, defines it as "Canaiuola, a black grape so called because its sweetness is incredibly pleasing to dogs." Another widely accepted theory is that the name Cannaiola derives from the Latin "Dies caniculares," meaning the days of the Dog Days in late July and early August, when the grapes begin to turn purple. Another theory holds that the name derives from the word "canna," referring to the practice of "holding up the vines by leaning them on canes," a practice widespread in areas rich in water like ours.
Cannaiola vines have been cultivated since time immemorial in the Marta area and in the neighboring territories of Capodimonte and Tuscania, southwest of Lake Bolsena, always managed by Martani citizens who jealously guard their traditions.
After a period of relative abandonment and the Controlled Designation of Origin (DOP) in 1996, Cannaiola cultivation intensified, and several vineyards were registered under the "Cannaiola" designation. The "Cannaiola dei Colli Etruschi Viterbesi" DOP recognition, as required by the relevant production regulations, is reserved for wines made from no less than 85% Canaiolo nero, locally known as Cannaiola.

The San Lazzaro Winery is a family-run business, founded in 2002 by Giacomo and Costantino Scatarcia with the aim of producing fine, traditional wines using artisanal and sustainable methods. Located in the Colli Etruschi Viterbesi DOC region, this volcanic area, with its age-old and highly-developed winemaking tradition, lies in the municipalities of Marta and Capodimonte, immersed in the pristine nature typical of the southern shore of Lake Bolsena.
